Mercedes Schlapp's job in the role of White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't easy. She has to deal with a president that acts as his own director of communications, multiple legal battles which can disrupt the White House's strategy for messaging as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries caught up in their own disputes. Schlapp, however, has not lost sight of her mission. She works closely in conjunction with White House political affairs and the legislative team and policy shops as well as the larger communications operation in order to ensure that the policies are implemented. So far, Schlapp has focused on school safety issues, addiction infrastructure, international trade and addiction. At the moment, Schlapp is not communicating with reporters. Her name was a big draw in the wake of being announced as an option to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a good position as White House strategist communications advisor. She has to deal with a president that acts as his own communications director as well as numerous legal fights that can throw off the administration's messaging strategy and Cabinet secretaries embroiled in their own controversies. Yet, through all of it Schlapp is focussed on the task at hand, working closely with White House's political and legislative affairs departments and policy shops as in the communications department for policy-related rollouts. She has focused on topics such as school safety, opioids and infrastructure as well as trade. The position she holds, however, means that Schlapp has not been in touch with a lot of reporters. But she drew a burst of attention in March when her name was floated as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks as communications director. It hasn't been an easy fight. Schlapp's allies started fighting Tony Sayegh on the news. Schlapp stated to The Washington Examiner that she spoke to Sayegh to discuss the recent article that was negative on him.
